It's no secret that mosquitoes can lead to itching, rash, fever and illnesses. But Missouri is known for mosquitoes in late spring, summer and early fall.

The first tip is to remove the breeding grounds. That means to get rid of standing water, keep your yard neat and try planting natural repellants such as eucalyptis or mint and use fans to keep your yard cooler.

*The immediate causes of death in patients with West Nile and other related viral encephalitis commonly include pneumonia, heart attack, pulmonary embolism, septicemia, etc., rather than direct neurological damage or dysfunction, per se. For some individuals with serious pre-existing health problems, West Nile virus infection is a contributory cause of death.
