BATS AND THEIR CONTROL

BATS AND THEIR CONTROL

Is that noise coming from your attic or fireplace making you "Batty"? If so, you are not alone. Bats are a serious problem in St. Louis City and County, as well as in St. Charles and Jefferson Counties in Missouri. Although only about 1% of bats become rabid, they can still pose a significant health risk in your home or business.  Bats can cause serious problems, & sometimes need to be professionally controlled.
According to the University of Missouri, there are nine species of bats that are commonly found in the St. Louis and St. Charles, MO areas. Most of these bats will find their homes and roost in caves or trees, however, three species regularly are found roosting in buildings. These are the Big Brown Bat, Little Brown Bat, and Evening Bat.
  • The little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus) is a brown, mouse-sized bat that occurs throughout Missouri. It hibernates in small numbers in Ozark caves during winter. In summer, it sometimes takes up residence in attics and buildings, where it rarely causes damage.
  • The big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) is a large bat, perhaps twice the size of the little brown bat, but still weighs only half an ounce. This species lives throughout Missouri and roosts by itself or in small groups in caves. Big brown bats commonly roost in buildings, where they sometimes hibernate.
  • The evening bat (Nycticeius humeralis) is present in Missouri during the spring, summer and early fall. It migrates south in winter. It roosts in buildings in summer.

Professional Inspections

EFFECTIVE BAT CONTROL

Once an entry point opens up in your home or business, bats and other pest or wildlife will find an opportunity to invade.

The first line of defense is an inspection to find out how the Bats are entering your home.  We start by looking for broken or missing roof shingles, damaged soffits, etc.

Once an entery point is determined, you can begin the exclusion process. This is where you place netting or tubes over the entryway which will allow the bat to swoop down, but confuse it so it can not regain access to your home or business.

Once the Bats are removed, you begin the clean up process. Because Bats have such a good sense of smell, any prior roost should be de-ordorized and sanitized to prevent new bats from taking up residence.
